Guatemala

Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast.

The country has 14 eco-regions ranging from Mangrove forests, to both ocean littorals with 5 different ecosystems. Guatemala has 252 listed wetlands, including 5 lakes, 61 lagoons, 100 rivers, and 3 swamps. Tikal National Park was the first mixed UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also has 37 volcanoes, four of them active.

Once the heart of the Maya Civilization, evidence of the great Empire are abundantly scattered throughout the landscape.

Guatemala City is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Guatemala. It is also the capital city of the local Guatemala Department and the largest city in Central America and the Caribbean.
