"Recently a Physician, acquaintance of mine, asked me "So what does your company do? "Medical Tourism" I said, and after brief explanation of what exactly Medical Tourism is, he goes "So, you’re done outsourcing everything else from America, now you’re outsourcing our patients". Huh?
Perhaps the fact that there are over 45 million Americans without any Health Insurance did not bother him. Or, the millions more that are "under insured", to say the least.
No, we are not outsourcing patients; we are not selling out to the big, bad... developing countries? What we do is, provide millions of hard working Americans with an option, an alternative to the overpriced, overhyped, and a lot of times underserved US hospitals. We provide a cost containment solution for the middle class worker. Not a permanent fix to our Healthcare System, but merely a temporary patch. And I am not just talking about Elective Aesthetic procedures. A lot of times the decision to seek medical care outside of US, is one of life and death. Not that improving somebody’s self esteem by enhancing their body image and acceptance of self, will not improve their and their family’s quality of life, it does, big time. But I am talking about the Valve replacements and the Cardiac stents, the Cataract and Retina surgeries, the Hip and Knee replacements, the Transplants, the Fertility treatments, the Spinal Cord injury and MS/ALS treatments. Those and many, many more alike that are not "just" one’s choice, but necessity, a life or death one. And the fact that those treatments come without months of waiting and with 50-80% discount, well that’s just "gravy".
OK, how about the Hospitals and Doctors, the skeptics will say. Good question, nobody wants to end-up one-on-one in a straw hut, with a rusty scalpel wielding shaman, under the influence of "magic" smoke. Right? I know I don’t, so consider this, over 25% of the US physicians are foreign trained, and close to 90% of physicians attending to US patients abroad are US trained. Moreover, all oversees hospitals we work with, are JC (Joint Commission) accredited, the same governing body that accredits US hospitals. Also consider this, as per May 19, 2009 report in "US News", only 170 out of 5,453 Hospitals in US are ranked. Of those, only 5 scored above 20% in reputation for treating "difficult" cases. Wonder who participated in this survey, a random pool of US physicians only.
Now, please don’t get me wrong. I firmly believe that we have the best doctors, scientists and hospitals in the world, but it’s a question of availability, accessibility and economics. And until each and every one of us can walk into any of our Elite clinics without losing the shirts of our backs, we will be looking at the "field" for options. And the truth is, the "field" has caught-up. The Globalization of Healthcare is not a thing of the future anymore, we are living it.
So my friends, embrace and exploit the opportunity. The better you is no more than a hop, skip and a jump away.
